Uṣūl al-fiqh or Islamic jurisprudence, is the theory from which Islamic law is derived using the Qurʾān, the Sunnah, ijmāʿ and qiyas. Islamic jurisprudence provides the student of knowledge the skill set that is required to extract rulings from Islamic text. It is the science concerning the comprehensive evidences of Islamic issues and evidences.

One of the first books of jurisprudence taught to the beginner students of knowledge is the Waraqāt. The author of this book is Abu al-Maʿah ʿAbd al-Mālik ibn Abī Muḥammad ʿAbd Allah ibn Yūsuf Juwayn, known as Imām al-Haramayn, who was born in 419 AH in a small village called Juwayn near Nishapur in Northern Iran. A great Shāfiʿī jurist.
