An official letter from the Grand Muftī Shaykh Ibn Bāz to Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī calling for the refutation of incorrect interpretations of Allah’s Attributes

I therefore hope that you, given your standing, will seek Allah’s reward by refuting this matter and clarifying the truth to the Muslims, as I myself did not listen to the lecture.

Subject: A lecture delivered by Nazīh Ḥammād broadcast on Qurʾān al-Karīm Radio.

From: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allāh ibn Bāz (1330–1420 AH / 1910–1999 CE)
To: The esteemed brother, the noble shaykh, Professor Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī (b. 1351 AH / 1933 CE), may Allah grant him safety.

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh.

To proceed:

The noble professor Muḥammad ibn Saʿd al-Shuwayʿir has informed me that you listened to a lecture by Nazīh Ḥammād which was broadcast on Qurʾān al-Karīm Radio on Tuesday, 12/06/1415 AH, between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. In that lecture, he mentioned what is regarded as an incorrect interpretation of the Attributes of Allah, namely al-Ḥayāʾ (Shyness) and al-Ghaḍab (Anger).

I therefore hope that you, given your standing, will seek Allah’s reward by refuting this matter and clarifying the truth to the Muslims, as I myself did not listen to the lecture.

May Allah grant you success in every good and multiply your reward. Indeed, He ﷻ is All-Hearing and Ever-Near.

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmatullāhi wa barakātuh.

Grand Muftī of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia,
Head of the Council of Senior Scholars,
and President of Scholarly Research and Religious Verdicts.
