Scholars give precedence to detailed criticism (jarḥ mufassal) over general praise (taʿdīl). If a person’s integrity is established, only detailed criticism is accepted against them. Criticising ISIS is not equivalent to criticising Muslim rulers. ISIS rose through rebellion against established systems and is unanimously rejected by Muslims and non-Muslims alike. Their actions align with the Khawārij, and therefore they must be condemned according to the Qurʾān, Sunnah and the methodology of the Salaf.
Praise for People
Shaykh Muqbil explains that graduates from Madinah who speak badly about Shaykh Rabi are likely biased followers of groups like the Ikhwan or Sururis. Their criticism does not harm the Shaykh; it only harms themselves, as the Shaykh stood firmly against many innovators.
