Steadfastness upon Faith: Understanding Istiqāmah in Islam

This lecture examines a concise yet comprehensive statement of guidance delivered by the Prophet Muḥammad ﷺ, as reported by Sufyān ibn ʿAbdullāh. It addresses the foundations of Islamic belief and practice, emphasising sincere faith in Allah ﷻ and the obligation to remain upright, consistent, and steadfast in one’s conduct.

Sufyān ibn ʿAbdullāh reported:

“I said, ‘O Messenger of Allah, tell me a word in Islam such that I will not need to ask anyone after you.’ The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said, ‘Say, “I have faith in Allah,” then remain steadfast.’”
Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim, no. 38.

The term Istiqāmah, in its literal sense, denotes moral integrity and adherence to the path of righteousness without deviation. It derives from the root Qiyām, which conveys continuity and uprightness, indicating that righteous conduct must be maintained consistently, carried out correctly, and upheld without straying from its proper course.

One-line Description (Excerpt):
