Questioner:
What is the ruling on the fasting woman whose menses begins shortly before the Iftār?
Shaykh Muqbil bin Hādī al-Wādiʿī:
It is obligatory for her to make up that day if the Muʼathin calls the ʼathān at the correct time [of maghrib]. However, if the sun has set and thereafter her menses begins whilst the Muathin has still not called the ʼathan – like the ʼathān of the Shīʿah (who wait until) the sky becomes dark, then her fast is correct and she does not have to make up for it.
But if the muʼathin calls the ʼathān at its correct time and her menses has begins 5 minute before it or similar to that, then it is obligatory upon her to make up that days fast.
