Shaykh Ibn Bāz’s Letter to Shaykh Rabīʿ al-Madkhalī on Allah’s Attributes

Shaykh Ibn Bāz asks Shaykh Rabīʿ al-Madkhalī to refute interpretations of Allah’s attributes in a radio lecture, in official correspondence dated 1415 AH.

I therefore hope that you, given your standing, will seek Allah’s reward by refuting this matter and clarifying the truth to the Muslims, as I myself did not listen to the lecture.

Subject: A lecture delivered by Nazīh Ḥammād broadcast on Qurʾān al-Karīm Radio.

From: ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAbd Allah ibn Bāz (b. 1330 AH/1910 CE; d. 1420 AH/1999 CE)
To: The esteemed brother, the noble Shaykh, Professor Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī (b. 1351 AH/1933 CE; d. 1447 AH/2025 CE), may Allah grant him safety.

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmat Allah wa barakātuh.

To proceed:

The noble professor Muḥammad ibn Saʿd ash-Shuwayʿir has informed me that you listened to a lecture by Nazīh Ḥammād which was broadcast on Qurʾān al-Karīm Radio on Tuesday, 12/06/1415 AH, between 7:00 and 8:00 a.m. In that lecture, he mentioned what is regarded as an incorrect interpretation of the Attributes of Allah, namely al-Ḥayāʾ (Shyness) and al-Ghaḍab (Anger).

I therefore hope that you, given your standing, will seek Allah’s reward by refuting this matter and clarifying the truth to the Muslims, as I myself did not listen to the lecture.

May Allah grant you success in every good and multiply your reward. Indeed, He is All-Hearing and Ever-Near.

As-salāmu ʿalaykum wa raḥmat Allah wa barakātuh.
