A Logical Refutation of the Claim of Qurʾānic Alteration: An Anecdote from al-Masjid al-Ḥarām

A sharp anecdote highlighting the internal inconsistency of claims regarding alleged Qurʾānic alteration, narrated by Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar Bāzmūl.

At this, the Shīʿī became confused, withdrew in defeat, and the shaykh resumed his lesson.”

Shaykh Muḥammad ibn ʿUmar Bāzmūl relates:

“It was mentioned to me that a Shīʿī once stood before Shaykh Badīʿ al-Dīn al-Sindī during the shaykh’s lesson in al-Masjid al-Ḥarām. The Shīʿī said to him: ‘You supplicate to Allah ﷻ that He be pleased with Abū Bakr and ʿUmar, while they were traitors. They removed Sūrat al-Wilāyah from the Qurʾān and concealed verses that establish the rightful leadership of ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib.’

Shaykh Badīʿ al-Dīn al-Sindī replied: ‘What I understand from your words is that ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib was a traitor like them.’

The Shīʿī responded: ‘How can you claim that ʿAlī was a traitor, when it was Abū Bakr and ʿUmar who concealed the verses of wilāyah?’

Shaykh Badīʿ al-Dīn al-Sindī then said: ‘Because ʿAlī became the Caliph after them. Why, then, did he not bring forth what Abū Bakr and ʿUmar had allegedly concealed from the Qurʾān? Consequently, one of two conclusions must follow: either ʿAlī was an accomplice in their supposed treachery, or nothing from the Qurʾān was concealed in the first place.’

At this, the Shīʿī became confused, withdrew in defeat, and the shaykh resumed his lesson.”
