The Change in Practice Regarding the Number of Rakʿahs in Tarāwīḥ

A brief historical observation by Shaykh ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAqīl on the shift in mosque practice regarding the number of rakʿahs in Tarāwīḥ, following scholarly clarification of the Sunnah.

The people then began to act upon their statements gradually, until this practice became widespread in the majority of mosques today.

Shaykh ʿAbdullāh ibn ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn ʿAqīl (d. 1441 AH / 2020 CE)

In the past, we did not know of anyone praying except twenty units of prayer in ṣalāt al-tarāwīḥ, and all of the people were upon this practice. Thereafter, some of the scholars spoke about this matter, such as ʿAbd al-ʿAzīz ibn Bāz and Muḥammad ibn Ṣāliḥ ibn ʿUthaymīn, and they stated that the Sunnah is eleven units of prayer. The people then began to act upon their statements gradually, until this practice became widespread in the majority of mosques today.
