Allah commands every person to treat their parents with kindness and excellence. A mother carries her child in hardship and gives birth in hardship, and the period of pregnancy and weaning lasts thirty months. As a person grows and reaches full maturity, and then reaches the age of forty, they turn to Allah in sincere supplication, saying:

“My Lord, inspire me to be grateful for the blessings You have granted me and my parents. Help me to do righteous deeds that please You. Grant goodness and righteousness to my children. Truly, I turn to You in repentance, and I submit myself completely to You.”

(Qur’an 46:15)

This verse reminds us of the immense sacrifices of our parents especially our mothers, and the lifelong duty we have to honuor, respect, and care for them. It also teaches us that true maturity is not only physical or financial, but spiritual: recognizing Allah’s favors, showing gratitude, living righteously, and praying for the next generation.

In his lecture “Be Dutiful to Your Parents,” Uways aṭ-Ṭawīl reflects on this verse, emphasizing that honoring one’s parents is among the greatest acts of worship. Through kindness, patience, and service to them, a believer earns Allah’s pleasure and strengthens their own faith.
