ʿUmdat al-Aḥkām (also known as ʿUmdah al-Aḥkām) is a renowned collection of authentic aḥādīth compiled by al-Ḥāfiẓ ʿAbd al-Ghanī al-Maqdisī (d. 600 AH / 1203 CE). It focuses primarily on narrations related to legal rulings and practical worship, making it a central text for students of fiqh and ḥadīth.
The Sickness and the Cure, authored by Imām Ibn al-Qayyim al-Jawziyyah (d. 751 AH / 1350 CE), was written in response to a question posed by an individual afflicted by a severe spiritual and emotional crisis. The questioner feared that, if left untreated, this ailment would lead to his destruction in both this life and the Hereafter. Despite repeated efforts to overcome his condition, its intensity continued to increase.
Recognising the depth of the question and the seriousness of the affliction, Ibn al-Qayyim carefully diagnosed the underlying causes and provided a detailed, insightful, and practical response. As a result, this classical work remains relevant across generations, offering guidance that is suitable for all times and places.
Through the study of these two works, this lesson highlights the balance between correct outward practice and sincere inward purification, guiding students towards comprehensive Islamic understanding and spiritual well-being.
