Advice for Sisters Cooking in Ramadan

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān reassures Muslim sisters who spend much of Ramadan cooking that they are rewarded for preparing food for those who are fasting. He emphasises that cooking does not prevent them from remembering Allah ﷻ, reciting Qurʾān, or engaging in dhikr, and encourages balanced worship.

Questioner:

A sister says, generally the muslim woman spends much time in the kitchen busy cooking food, and therefore she doesn’t have the opportunity to benefit from this month [Ramaḍān]. Is there some advice for her and is she rewarded for cooking food?

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān:

Yes she is rewarded for this because she is preparing food for people that are fasting, and this is a type of aiding one another upon righteousness and piety, thus she is rewarded for this. And cooking doesn’t prevent her from saying SubḥānAllāh and Lā ilāha illā Allāh ﷻ and Allāhu Akbar, or from reciting that which she has memorised from the Qur’ān. Cooking doesn’t prevent her from remembering Allāh ﷻ.
