How Should a New Student Start Seeking Knowledge?

Shaykh Muhammad al-Madkhali advises beginners to start with the fundamental sciences: Aqeedah, Tafsir, Hadith, Fiqh, Usul al-Fiqh, Usul al-Hadith, and the Arabic language. Once these are mastered, they can move on to advanced studies in stages.

Questioner:

What do you advise us with if we want to seek knowledge, bearing in mind that we are at the initial stages of seeking knowledge?

Shaykh Muḥammad ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī:

If you are at the beginning stages, then build [yourself] and start with the fundamental sciences of ʿaqīdah, tafsīr, ḥadīth, fiqh, ʼuṣūl fiqh, ʼuṣūl ḥadīth, and the Arabic language. Then, when you have mastered the fundamentals, enter into what we have previously mentioned and answered. So, it is a must that you proceed in stages in this manner.
