Should I Quit Studies to Support My Family?

A student asks Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan if he should leave his studies to support his poor family. The Shaykh says it is better to seek income for the family when needed. But if possible, one should try to balance both work and education.

Question:

I’m a student and my family’s financial condition is very bad.  So is seeking sustenance, spending on them and helping them better than seeking knowledge and attending lessons?

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ ibn Fawzān al-Fawzān:

Yes. If this is the state of affairs, then seeking sustenance for yourself and your family is better than seeking knowledge. Nevertheless, if you can combine between the two then do so. Work and attend the lesson when it’s on and then return back to work. Combine between them.
