Respecting the Scholars – Shaykh Ḥasan al-Bannā

Respecting the Scholars – Shaykh Ḥasan al-Bannā

This important and heartfelt reminder by Shaykh Ḥasan al-Bannā emphasizes the obligation of respecting, honouring, and benefiting from the scholars of Islam.

He explains that the ʿulamāʾ are the inheritors of the Prophets and the carriers of sacred knowledge. Through their efforts, the Qur’an and the Sunnah are preserved, taught, and conveyed to future generations. Respecting them is therefore part of respecting the religion itself.

The lecture highlights the correct manners of students and community members when dealing with scholars, including humility, good speech, patience, and avoiding suspicion and backbiting. It also warns against belittling scholars, spreading doubts about them, or judging them without knowledge. Shaykh Ḥasan reminds listeners that while scholars are human and may err, their status remains lofty due to their service to Islam. Differences of opinion should be approached with wisdom, fairness, and respect.

This reminder calls believers to revive the etiquette of learning and companionship with the people of knowledge, and to preserve unity and trust within the Muslim community.
