Here is our “Ustādh” again…with a false understanding:
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Ḥasan said, “….and he made him bleed until he wounded his head and the blood was coming out of his face, because he was an innovator. I say to those people today: Why don’t you take this athar and every innovator – why don’t you beat them up?”
Because ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb was the LEADER of the Muslims. It is not upon the layman to take matters into his own hands. When ʿUmar ibn al-Khaṭṭāb expelled him to Īrāq, did the laymen of ʿĪrāq beat him? No, rather they BOYCOTTED him until ʿUmar allowed them to speak to him! [Al-Ājurrī – al-Sharīʿah, p.74]
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Ḥasan said: “The reason is because it is not the right time, right? Exactly! Boycotting is the same!..”
Questioner:
When is it allowed to cut off and boycott an innovator? And is it allowed to boycott an innovation in this time?
Shaykh Zayd al-Madkhalī:
The ruling in relation to boycotting an innovator is NOT restricted to a time or place, however, before boycotting, it is clarified to the innovator. It is clarified to him; he is shown his mistake, and the correct way is shown to him. This is [done] before he is boycotted. Thereafter, we see if he has benefitted from the clarification and advice, [if he has benefitted and abandoned the innovation], then he is not boycotted. But if he insists upon his innovation, and spreads it among the people, then he is boycotted and warned against continuously, [there is no specific amount of time]. And when he returns to the truth and accepts it, the boycotting is then stopped. Just as the way of the people of knowledge, those who spread and defend the Sunnah, those who clarify the mistakes of innovations and the innovators, and those who warn against innovations and its people. The books of knowledge are filled with this.
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Ḥasan said: “And I give you the same example: ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, a man asked him about the same thing, the same shubuha, he brought āyāt mutashābihāt. ʿAlī was sitting one day and he said to the people: “…Who wants to ask me a question, who has a question?” ʿAlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, raḍi Allāhu ʿanhu, – a man stood up and said: “I have a question, and he asked the question. ʿĀlī was shocked about the question which he asked because it was from the āyāt that were mutashābihāt. Ālī did not stand up, get a stick and beat him up, cause Ālī’s time, was not the time for what? What did Ālī do? He said: “May Allāh kill you!” That’s all he could do, that’s his power now. He could just curse him..!?”
Ibn Taymīyyah said: The first innovation to appear in Islām was the bidʿah of the Khawārij and the Shīʿah. It appeared during the rule of ʿĀlī ibn Abī Ṭālib, and he PUNISHED these two groups. As for the Khawārij, they fought him so he KILLED them. As for the Shīʿah, then he BURNT the extremist from amongst them with fire after killing them…” [al-Majmūʿ, vol. 3, p464].
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Ḥasan said: “May Allāh’s curse be upon him. May Allāh’s curse be upon him. This is what we’re saying. The Saḥābah were looking at the time and the place…”
The COMPANION, Jundub al-Azdī, said: “We MARCHED with Ālī ibn Abī Ṭālib against the Khawārij and reached their camps.” [Tarīkh al-Umām wal-Mulūk, v.6, p.42]
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Ḥasan said: “At the time of Ālī, his leadership was doubtful. He was not in a position where his imārah, his leadership – was fully agreed upon. There was khilāf. ʿUmar’s time was what? Ijmāʿ, consensus. So if Ālī spoke, his leadership, everything….so he couldn’t speak…he couldn’t deal with it like that..”
The great companion, the rightly guided Khalāfah, ʿĀlī ibn Abī Ṭālib: “couldn’t deal with it like that…”!!!?
Yāqūt said: “ʿĀlī ibn Abī Ṭālib FOUGHT the Khawārij at al-Nahra’wān.” [Muʿjam al-Buldān 95/3750]
Ibn al-Jawzī said: “Nearly 2000 from the Khawārij retracted and joined Ālī’s forces while the rest [of the Khawārij] revolted against him and they were KILLED.” [Talbīs Iblīs, p.31]
ʿAbd al-Raḥmān Ḥasan said, “We say the same thing brothers, when the boycott is a hāl, it is a situation, it can be dealt with, it can …. the religion, please, we’re the first to deal with you guys wallāh. But when it is not going to work, and boycotting the people is not going to work, then we’re going to go to the houses, we’re going to call them, we’re going to bring them to our gatherings, we’re going to give them daʿwah for them to leave what they are upon. Why? مراعاة المصالح والمفاسد To look at the maṣālih and the mafāsid…”
Questioner:
O Shaykh, some of the brothers say that it is not permissible to boycott an innovator with a harsh boycotting unless there is a benefit in it, and if not, then it is not allowed. However, the origin behind boycotting is for protection, thus it is permissible for anyone to perform, because it will protect him from doubts. So, what is your opinion about this?
Shaykh Rabīʿ ibn Hādī al-Madkhalī:
“It is the children, the ones who instruct the benefits and harms [of boycotting]? The benefit of the small student of knowledge is for him to flee from the people of innovation. Indeed, we have experienced many people from those who hold onto the salafī methodology, and it was due to this tamyīʿ [watering the manḥaj down] they were ruined and left the salafī manḥaj. They became from its enemies and those who argue against it. So I deem fit for the young beginner student of knowledge to save his religion just like the seniors from the salafī would. They would block their ears and flee from listening to even a word of an innovator, fearing that shayṭān would place a trial in him which he would not be able to get rid of. From those noble men [of the salaf] were Ayyūb al-Sakhtiyāni, Ibn Sīrīn, and their likes. There is a book which will reform you all. It has been written to explain these affairs. Inshā Allāh, you will read it and benefit from it.”
Questioner:
Is it permissible to sit with a caller from the people of innovation?
Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān:
It is not permissible to sit with the people of innovation. Since they will affect you in the sitting. Allāh ﷻ, the Most High, said:
“And when you see those who engage in a false conversation about Our Verses (of the Qurʾān) by mocking at them, stay away from them till they turn to another topic. And if Shayṭān (Satan) causes you to forget, then after the remembrances, sit not you in the company of those people who are the wrongdoers.” [Q 6:68]
So it is not permissible to sit with the wrongdoers. And the innovators are from the wrongdoers. So it is not allowed to sit with them nor befriend them since they will affect those who sit and befriend them.
