Advice for Someone Cut Off by Their Mother

If a mother cuts off contact, the child should persist in trying to reconnect, pray for her, and maintain filial duty. Parents have immense rights, especially when Muslim. The child should avoid resentment, act with patience, and continue to seek reconciliation through good deeds and charity.

Questioner

My mother cut me off and I have tried time and time again to speak to her but she refuses to meet me. What advice do you have for me? May Allāh ﷻ bless you.

Shaykh Muḥammad Bāzmūl

The advice I have for her is that she should continue to try, that she should pray for her mother, that she try to keep her filial duty to her and never be the one to cut ties, because Allāh ﷻ gave parents a tremendous right, even when they are unbelievers, so can you think of how much greater it is when she is a Muslim? Her right would be that much more deserved. She should also think well of her mother and not carry bad memories of her and she should avoid anything that would lead to ties being severed.

She should also exercise patience and tolerance, continue to try to connect with her mother, pray for her and maintain her filial obligation towards her through acts of charity as well as through other means. We ask Allāh ﷻ to help us and help her towards sources of good, righteousness and guidance.
