Rules on Criticising and Praising People

Scholars give precedence to detailed criticism (jarḥ mufassal) over general praise (taʿdīl). If a person’s integrity is established, only detailed criticism is accepted against them. When detailed criticism conflicts with detailed praise, the praise is accepted only if it refutes the criticism with evidence, unless the person is known for deception.

A Scholar Visiting Innovation Mosques

When a scholar repeatedly visits mosques of the People of Innovation, one must first determine whether he is ignorant of their reality or part of them. Shaykh Muqbil explains that graduates from Madinah who speak badly about Shaykh Rabi are likely biased followers of groups like the Ikhwan or Sururis. Their criticism does not harm the Shaykh; it only harms themselves, as the Shaykh stood firmly against many innovators.

Do Not Teach in Innovators’ Mosques

Shaykh Salih al-Fawzan says it is not permissible to hold lessons in mosques of innovators while abandoning the mosques of the people of Sunnah. Teaching in those mosques encourages innovation and gives them a false proof, while the sincere seekers will attend the mosques of the Sunnah.
